Let me just start off by saying, I hated on essential oils for the longest time.
I used to make fun of people who believed in the “magic” of essential oils.
Now I am having to humble myself, because I am retracting all my previous statements about the foolishness of essential oils, because I have become an oily girl!
I love essential oils.
I started buying them about a month ago as per the suggestion of one of my preceptors on my Women’s Health clinical rotation. I loved the way she introduced them to me, because she never once used words like “cure.” Rather, she explained that it’s a great addition to normal medicinal therapies and helps relieve basic symptomatology. Like if a person is experiencing stomach pain due to constipation or diarrhea, rubbing an oil on your stomach will not reverse the cause of that pain however it may help in decreasing it. Essential oils should never be used as therapy, but rather they can be utilized as an adjunct or boost with normal treatment.
My View as a Medical Provider
As a soon-to-be physician assistant, my goal in being the best practitioner that I can be is to be fully informed with what and how people are treating their medical conditions, in addition to what treatment options are recommended standard of care. I know that essential oils are very rarely going to be the first line treatment for people’s dermatitis or sleep disturbances, but I also know that they can relieve symptoms and promote wellness.
I am not going to prescribe essential oils to my patients and I know full and well that they are not going to cure cancer or eliminate one’s risk of developing asthma or COPD. However, they do have a place in treating the patient homeopathically. They do not take the place of antibiotics, steroids, or pain killers, but they can be use in adjunct with medicine and lifestyle changes to promote health, wellness, and vitality.

How To Use
The best uses for essential oils include aromatic diffusion, topical application, and dietary consumption. These health-promoting botanicals can be used in a variety of settings to boost immunity, enhance wellness, and purify your home. So many of the products that we use and consume in our home are laden with harmful chemicals and irritants that may effectively clean, but they also irritate our skin and breathing passages.
Making conscious decisions when it comes to health, home, & beauty products has become a popular consumer-driven fad. But I believe it doesn’t have to be! I am constantly trying to find products that are healthy-swaps and it helps when they have become so readily available to the consumer.
Right now, I love diffusing Stress Away or Lavender essential oils at the end of a long day at the clinic because it calms my mind and body. Depending on the mood you are in, there are a variety of blends to promote energy, vitality, immunity, and mood improvement. Basically, there is an essential oil for everyone!
And I’m still sort of learning the basics of essential oils. I by no means know everything there is to know about how to use them and all their benefits, but I’m hoping to share some of this journey with y’all in the coming months!
